Cable percussion drilling method.

Cable percussion drilling has long been the most common form of drilling in the united kingdom if not the world. Depending on access limitations and favourable ground conditions boreholes up to 60m depth can be formed. Cable percussion drilling can also drill deeper and drill further into the water table than other drilling methods. This is part of a new series of videos we have launched covering safe and effective drilling on geo environmental and geotechnical site investigations.

Percussion drilling is a drilling technique in which a drill bit attached to rope or cable is repeatedly raised and lowered impacting soil and rock and making a hole deeper. Cable tool drilling is a method of drilling in which a hole is made by the repeated blows generated by lifting and dropping a heavy chisel bit on rocks or underground formations. Frequently used to drill wells or during mineral prospecting activities this type of drilling has been used for thousands of years and is adaptable to whatever technology is available. The heavy usually blunt chisel bit is the tool and the cable could be made of something as simple as a manila rope or multiple steel strands wireline.

A cable percussion crew consists of two fully nvq trained operatives one lead driller and an additional support operative. The technique is often also referred to as cable tool. Cable percussion drilling is a tried and tested method of site investigation. The drilling technique allows the installation of casing inside the borehole to prevent loose soils collapsing into the hole allowing the borehole to be advanced to considerable depths while maintaining good progress.

The danbar drilling team are able to deliver extremely reliable and effective cable percussive drilling techniques which offer high levels of cost efficiency as well as a range of technical benefits. Cable percussion shell and auger is the most common drilling method used for geotechnical site or ground investigations in the uk. Thanks to our experience and versatile rigs this method of drilling is ideal for use alone or as part of a wider drilling strategy on site. Our drilling operatives also have various certifications such as sssts.
