Yup they said never tile over painted concrete but they did say you can add a whole other subfloor over it to make it work ex. But there is a solution to the problem. If tiles are installed over a painted floor the bond strength of the tile adhesive. It will help to prevent peeling and flaking of the paint over time.

High adhesion primer will chemically bond to the tile itself while still creating a surface on which you can reliably paint. Ceramic tiles will not adhere to an enamel painted floor because the surface is too smooth. I can tell you from working in this area that the paint coating does seem to be well adhered to the concrete. While you can install tile directly on concrete problems erupt when the concrete cracks or shifts.

I do not know of any product designed to work above or onto of a painted surface concrete. Painted concrete can be made porous with sandblasting or other hard abrasive actions. Answer answer it is possible to bond porcelain tile to a painted surface but it isn t recommended because the overall tile attachment is limited to the strength of the bond of the paint to the concrete. All paint will need to be removed before you begin installing the tile.

Unless the paint in question is properly applied epoxy paint not the kind that comes in a spray can you shouldn t install ceramic tiles over either paint or paint overspray. Tile cannot be attached directly to painted concrete as the thin set will not adhere well to the paint. Water should readily absorb in the concrete as an indication that it. That would have created a big step up for us though so we liked the idea of keeping it as flush as possible.

Once the concrete floor is paint free the tiling process is similar to most other floor tiling jobs. You need not be in this business for long time before the pickle of having to work over a painted concrete surface comes up.
