By keeping food in the drawer you are showing that you want this extra heat to be generated.
Just like you wouldn t put food into an oven to warm it up on shabbos you may not put food in a warming drawer on shabbos.
When you open the drawer to put the food inside you are going to cause the burner to go on and compensate for the heat loss that you created.
However if the warmer drawer is adjustable or it could reach temperatures of 275 degrees it is certainly forbidden.

And similarly as with ovens you must also cover your warming drawer controls if you are leaving it on over shabbos and not change the setting.
